Tuesday Tidbit – Surprising Myths About Clutter (Part 1)

Surprising Myths About Clutter (Part 1) outtaspaceorganizing.comThis week and next week we’ll be looking at my top five surprising myths about clutter. These myths keep you stuck with too much stuff. Read on for the first two.

Myth # 1 – You FIRST Need to Be Organized

Nope! First you need to let go of stuff that you no longer love, need or use. If you don’t keep it, you don’t need to organize it. It IS that easy.

Myth # 2 – Cute Containers Are the Answer

Nope again! There are a few stores that I just LOVE to browse in and it’s the containers, bins and baskets with their storage possibilities that are so much fun. But even I don’t randomly buy them.

First you need to know what you need. If you buy for what you have right now before you practice the advice in Myth #1, you may end up with more or less than you need, which is just plain frustrating.

And let’s face it, a bin or box can be a crutch to keep items instead of letting them go. How much unknown stuff is already packed away in boxes that will never see the light of day? Enough said.

Tuesday Tidbit – Organize Your Key Documents BEFORE They (and YOU!) Become a Burden

If something happened to you, would your loved ones know where to find the following?

  • Financial and tax records
  • Medical records
  • Family records
  • Will and living will
  • Health care directives
  • Life and other insurance policies
  • Funeral details and wishes
  • Birth certificate/Passport
  • Veteran/Military records
  • Online account usernames and passwords

Or would they have to dig through piles of papers scattered throughout your home?

Save them the stress and frustration. Give your loved ones the gift of pulling all of your key documents together now so they don’t have to do it later.

Get your Ducks in a Row with The Peace of Mind organizing solution. This organizing solution is for you if you want hands-on assistance and practical tools to help you organize your key documents without struggling alone.

Tuesday Tidbit – Be a Paper Decision-Maker

Starting today, be a decision-maker for all the papers that come into your life. For each paper you encounter (mail, kids’ school papers, bills, receipts, or junk mail), do one of five things:

  1. Discard/recycle it.
  2. Delegate to someone else to handle.
  3. Act on it now if it can be done in less than 2 minutes.
  4. Defer action (put in “bills to be paid” or “make a call” folder).
  5. File it for future reference… but remember we only look at 20% of what we file.

Resist peeking at a paper and simply returning it to the stack of papers on your desk or kitchen counter. Start today and really handle the paper that will always flow into your home. If you take care of it today, you won’t add to the stack from yesterday and the days before. Then you can work on the postponed decisions pile… the one that makes you crazy.
