Tuesday Tidbit – TODAY is Take Back Time Day!

Yes, today, October 24, 2017, is Take Back Time Day.

One of the questions I ask my clients during our first working session is “If you were not thinking about or worrying about your excess stuff and clutter, what would you do instead?”

Many say, “spend more TIME with family and friends, take TIME for a vacation, have more TIME for hobbies, take TIME to exercise, have TIME to plan great meals, have TIME for me!”

You see, our excess stuff drains our energy and steals our TIME. When you start to embrace simplicity, the process begins by letting go of the excess and in turn, also avoiding the trap of accumulating more. The result is you gain TIME.

If you are curious about how you can have TIME for the people and activities you love, let’s simply start the conversation. Either call or email me to find out how or if we should take your simplifying and journey together.

Tuesday Tidbit – Are You Shuffling?

Are You Shuffling? outtaspaceorganizing.com

Today is Playing Card Collection Day. Yup, this is a real day on the Days of the Year website.

Instead of playing cards, it made me think of all the times we shuffle our piles of stuff around the house. We are masters at shuffling if someone is coming over on short notice. Right?

We shove random items in the drawers, piles go to the bedroom (quick shut the door!), down to the basement, or any place you think someone will not see. We do this because our piles embarrass us, yet they continue to grow for many reasons.

  1. We have not created an actual home for our belongings.
  2. We don’t have systems to handle the in-flow of papers.
  3. We’ve received gifts we don’t like or need, but keep anyway.
  4. We are not motivated to do anything…unless the doorbell is going to ring.
  5. We are overwhelmed.
  6. We don’t know where to start.
  7. We’re just tired, BUT also tired of the piles.

It’s not your fault. You just need to put yourself first and seek help and support for the journey. If you’re ready to chat about how we could create more calm in your home together, reach out by phone or email.

Tuesday Tidbit – Add “Dots” to Your Laundry!

Add "Dots" to Your Laundry outtaspaceorganizing.com

Is laundry a big hassle for you? Want some help from others? Here’s a quick and super easy tip that is sure to make a difference and laundry less of a hassle.

It’s typical if clothes are passed down within a family that there is confusion as to whose is whose. Especially if yesterday “child one” wore a certain tee shirt and today “child two” has it on because it was in his or her drawer or closet.

Enter the dot, a simple black dot in the neck or waist band that corresponds to your children. The oldest child is one dot and when it is passed on to the next child another dot is added.  That’s it!

This simple system allows everyone including spouses, kids, grandparents, or a babysitter to know which items belong to which child. It also avoids the excuse of not helping because they don’t know where it goes. Now they know.

If you need help to create other simple systems or have questions about how we might work together, let’s simply start the conversation. Either call or email me to find out how or if we should take your simplifying and organizing journey together.

Tuesday Tidbit – Integrity is the Norm

As a member of the National Association of Productivity & Organizing Professionals (NAPO) I adhere to their strict code of ethics. Other NAPO members do too.

Recently I found $2,032 while helping a client simplify the master bedroom closet and another $2,694 when we tackled the dressers. We had joked before getting started that any money I found I got to keep. The $2,032 made us smile, but the total of $4,726 was a fun kind of day! She had completely forgotten about this money tucked into shoe boxes, clothing and envelopes.

I reached out to other professional organizers to ask about their experiences and surprises and here are a few responses. Keep in mind that in 99% of these cases the clients did not remember they had these items or cash/checks.

 $300 cash                                $500 cash
 $6,000 cash                            $13,000 cash & checks
 $20,000 CD                            $40,000 cash

Also found was $15,000 in a rice cooker set for donation (the organizer looked inside); a $25,000 ring pinned to the hem of pants intended to be donated (they found the receipt in a file cabinet); and $100,000 in savings bonds because the client didn’t know how to cash them in (good news: the organizer drove her client to the bank!).

It is a fun day when you make a difference in literally hundreds and thousands of ways! While there is no guarantee of finding similar items, you can be sure if I do, you will be the first to know.

Tuesday Tidbit – Do You Need Flashlight Focus?

My clients tell me one of their biggest challenges is just getting started. They are overwhelmed with the entire scope of what is on their mind. They have often been stuck for years and can’t see a way to gain traction.

Here is where the concept of having a flashlight focus comes in.

When you shine a flashlight, it doesn’t illuminate your entire house, it focuses on one spot. This is how you reduce the feeling of being overwhelmed and focus on one area. Instead of the entire house, the kitchen, the master bedroom, or the garage, you reduce your focus to one kitchen cabinet, a drawer in a desk, the blouses/tops in the master bedroom closet, or the summer gardening tools.

By starting small and experiencing success, trust me, there is joy in accomplishing something!

It is part of the process for me to help my clients implement the flashlight focus.  If you are curious about how we can implement this strategy in your life, let’s simply start the conversation. Either call or email me and let’s shine a light on what is on your mind.
